Flower Care
Many people are often frustrated by how short-lived a bouquet may be once they get it home. They may forget that fresh cut flowers are still living entities that can be encouraged to last much longer under the right conditions.
The following tips will help make your flowers last longer:
Caring for Your Fresh Flowers: 7 Essential Tips
Keep your blooms looking beautiful for as long as possible with these simple and effective care tips:
- Replenish Water Frequently
Flowers are thirsty! Especially within the first 1–2 days, they can absorb all the water in a vase.
Top up the water daily.
Change the water entirely every 2–3 days to prevent bacteria buildup.
This keeps your flowers hydrated and smelling fresh — no one likes that unpleasant odor from stagnant water! - Trim the Stems Regularly
Before placing your flowers in a vase, trim at least ½ inch off the stems.
Use a sharp, clean pair of scissors or floral shears.
Re-trim the stems each time you change the water.
Freshly cut stems absorb water better, keeping your blooms hydrated and vibrant. - Keep Flowers Away from Heat and Direct Sunlight
Unlike potted plants, cut flowers do best in cool, shaded spots.
Avoid placing arrangements near windows, heaters, or appliances.
Sun and heat accelerate wilting. - Avoid Ripening Fruit Nearby
Fruit such as apples and bananas release ethylene gas, which causes flowers to age faster.
Keep your arrangements away from your fruit bowl to extend their lifespan. - Wash Vases Thoroughly Between Uses
After discarding an old arrangement:
Wash your vase with hot, soapy water to remove any bacteria.
Even if the vase looks clean, invisible bacteria can linger and affect your next bouquet. - Use Flower Food (When Appropriate)
Most cut flowers benefit from commercial flower food, which helps:
Feed the blooms with essential nutrients.
Inhibit bacterial growth in the water.
Alternatively, you can make your own with:
1 tsp sugar
2 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp bleach
added to warm tap water.
💡 Note: Some flowers such as zinnias, sunflowers, and gladiolus may prefer just clean water without flower food. - Always Use Sharp Cutting Tools
Avoid using dull scissors, which can crush the stem ends and restrict water absorption.
Use sharp, clean floral shears or scissors for all trimming.
By following these tips, you’ll help your fresh flowers stay radiant and joyful for days longer.
